Today on 86 different local versions of the Google home page, including Google.com USA, Google has posted a logo to honor International Women’s Day.

The logo was designed by Doodler Betsy Bauer, who illustrated the logo from the ground up. She explained:

“The idea for the final illustration came to me while I was doing one of my favorite things — sketching in a coffee shop. When drawing from life, you really observe how each human face is unique. People come in all shapes and sizes!” [x]

Jarang sekali saya baca novel genre ini. Roman fiksi sejarah pertama dan terakhir saya adalah ‘De Winst’-nya Afifah Afra. Tapi, novel karangan Widya W. Harun ini beda. Di samping bercerita tentang keadaan sosial dan politik di tanah Batavia, novel ini juga mengangkat kisah percintaan para bangsawan yang hidup di kawasan prestisius Menteng. Kenapa tahun 1936? Karena rentang waktu 1930-1936 tidak ada kejadian sejarah yang penting yang ‘pantas’ diingat, sehingga penulis (kemungkinan besar) bisa menyisipkan peristiwa dan kejadian fiktif yang berasal dari imajinasinya. Kejadian penting di sekeliling tahun 1936 yang berhasil di-capture sejarah adalah lahirnya Sumpah Pemuda di tahun 1928 dan keterpurukan ekonomi di tahun 1930.

Dimulai dengan upaya tokoh sentral Kirani Rijkaard melakukan pergerakan memperjuangkan ide dan hak orang pribumi melalui surat kabar Fajar. Saya menemukan hal yang sama dari dua tokoh di dua roman fiksi sejarah ‘De Winst’ yang saya baca sebelumnya, yaitu sentralnya sama-sama perempuan, sama-sama nalarnya cerdas (pastinya), dan sama-sama boyish (bahkan di De Winst, tokoh sentralnya menyamar sebagai laki-laki dan berhasil menarik hati pacar tunangannya). Kemudian konflik berawal dari salah lamar Hans van Deventer kepada Kirana Rijkaard, padahal Hans tertarik kepada adiknya Kirani. Di sinilah ironisnya. Karena berita yang sepotong-potong dan komunikasi yang amburadul rusaklah semua rencana.

Konflik yang ada di buku ini mungkin terlihat biasa saja. Namun karena terjadi di Menteng tahun 1936, maka hal itu jadi semakin rumit. Bukannya berhenti membacanya, saya malah semakin masuk dalam alur cerita, semakin penasaran seperti apa tokoh akan menyelesaikan masalahnya. Saya harap Kirani memiliki konflik yang lebih dramatis sehingga menonjolkan keteguhan pribadinya. Saya harap Hans tidak serapuh dan secanggung itu, apalagi di depan ayahnya. Saya harap akhir cerita tidak terlalu dipaksakan terutama bab rumah keluarga Rijkaard yang dirampok. Satu bintang untuk deskripsi penulis tentang waktu dan latar yang memancing rasa penasaran. Satu bintang untuk akhir kisah Kirani-Hans-Kirana yang tak terduga-duga , dan bintang terakhir untuk puisi-puisi Hans van Deventer.
